Weeds
2023
A group exhibition featuring Matěj Liška and Matouš Hrbek, curated by Aleš Zapletal.

The exhibition Plevel draws on the elements of constructed chaos by Matěj Pokorný, associative totemism by Matouš Hrbek, and reactive objects by Matěj Liška. These entrenched and freely vegetating forms will be uprooted from their original habitats to find nourishment and vitality as a new collective within the shared space of the gallery.
Aleš Zapletal:
“Matěj Pokorný doesn’t hold back. He knows the seductive possibilities of painterly substance—its hardening, its sheen—hovering somewhere between slime and scab, between Dahmer’s fascination with the gleam of viscera and the subversive culture of Jean Dubuffet.
Pokorný isn’t interested in sharp shapes or tribal patterns. He pierces, stitches, scratches, burns, leaves things to freeze in the yard or soak in the rain, pours glue, chisels with a jackhammer, and who knows what else. This is how indoctrination is punished. Can a painting be so smeared, so defiled, that it becomes uncultured?”
